The Office of the Australian Information Commissioner (OAIC) is a separate Australian Government entity established under the Australian Information Commissioner Act 2010, responsible for protecting and promoting privacy and information access rights. The functions of the OAIC are: • ensuring the proper handling of personal information in accordance with the Privacy Act 1988 and other legislation; • securing the public’s right to access information and promoting open government under the Freedom of Information Act 1982; and • performing strategic functions relating to information management policy and practice in the Australian Government.
